Only the sixth player in school history to be invited to a college all-star game (Texas vs. the Nation in 2007), Trey Lewis was a model of consistency throughout his Washburn career. He played in every game on the Ichabods' schedule the last four seasons and closed out his career with 31 consecutive starts.

Lewis attended Washburn Rural High School, where he played football for head coach Arron Barnett. He was an All-State Class 6A honorable mention, second-team all-city and first-team All-Centennial League choice for the Junior Blues. He was also named the team's defensive most valuable player in 2002.

Deciding to stay local, Lewis embarked on his collegiate career at Washburn in 2003. He started three of 11 games at weak-side defensive tackle. He finished the year with 18 tackles (six solos), a sack and two stops behind the line of scrimmage.

In 2004, Lewis started the final eight contests on the team's 12-game schedule. He posted 31 tackles (14 solos) with a sack, three stops for losses and a blocked kick. He recovered and caused one fumble.

Lewis was named All-Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics Association first-team in 2005, adding Football Gazette All-American third-team honors. He started all 12 games, as he recorded 45 tackles (22 solos) with eight stops behind the line of scrimmage, including four sacks. He also caused and recovered a fumble.

As a senior, Lewis earned All-American and All-MIAA first-team honors. He was also named the MIAA'S Defensive Most Valuable Player. Starting all 11 games at weak-side defensive tackle, he ranked third on the team with 62 tackles (26 solos). He registered four sacks, 10 stops for losses and two pressures. He caused a fumble, batted away two passes and blocked one kick.

In 46 games at Washburn, Lewis started 34 contests. He collected 156 tackles (68 solos) with 10 sacks for minus-70 yards and 23 stops for losses totaling 88 yards. He caused three fumbles and recovered two others. He also deflected two passes and blocked a pair of kicks.
